5 day Botanical art class

This is an opportunity for semi advanced students to work with wild specimens found in the forests, hills and meadows in an unspoilt part of Transylvania, in a class of just five students. In November, the meadows are filled with dried milkweed pods and papery beech leaves are found throughout the forests. We will spend time learning about field journaling, learning watercolor techniques in the studio, and work towards a finished painting that will capture the beauty of this landscape.

Classes shall take place in POD, a studio classroom filled with northern light. Each student will have their own desk and slant board. Classes will explore the process of creating using subject matter gathered by you on foot. We shall explore this unspoilt landscape together and in the company of a local guide, learning about the plants and finding samples on which to work inside.

accomodations

You shall stay in a peaceful farming settlement in great comfort, with plenty of good food and fresh air. The village of Copsa Mare is surrounded by species rich grasslands, deep valleys and high forested ridges full of beech, oak and hornbeam. These forests are home to brown bears, honey buzzards, roe buck and wild boar, as well as a bewildering array of moths. There are lots of lovely insects as well!

The hosts, Rachel and James de Candole, live all year round in the village in the former town hall, built in the 1890s under the time of the Dual Monarchy and now faithfully restored by them as their family home. The de Candoles own set number 19/150 of The Transylvania Florilegium and during our stay with them, we shall be able to study this remarkable compilation of botanical paintings depicting the wild flora of Transylvania. If any of you ride, our hosts have their own horses, all classically schooled at home.

This will be a relaxing five days, with the days devoted to concentrated study. You will get lots of fresh air, exercise (the land is full of steep valleys so you need to be reasonably fit!), and good food and wine. We shall have meals all together in the village, with at least two evenings dining out in our favourite places nearby. Three of you will have your own bedroom, two of you shall share.

The weather in early November is typically warm and dry. Please bring good walking shoes and a waterproof jacket.
